Garden 2016 – Getting Ready!

We’re back! We had to skip gardening in 2015 because we had some major weed problems to take care of on our property. But, we have them mostly under control (as well as you can on a farm in the country) and we’re ready to jump back into gardening! The boys and I missed it so much last year.

We’re moving garden locations so we can expand a little and plant more this year. We are also doing a lot of other outdoor projects all over the property so I’ll throw those in here and there as well.

Here is what we have done so far to get the garden beds ready:

So far we have started all tomatoes, kale, spinach, swiss chard, broccoli, brussels sprouts, lettuce, eggplant and all the herbs.

Tilled up new garden beds and weed clean out (the un-fun part)

We will be putting up the garden fence today  to keep out Rabbit, Deer and our farm dog Josie who thinks new tilled dirt makes the best nap spot.

We also planted 2 new climbing rosebushes that I hope will take off and make our fence line pretty again!

Of course, juice breaks are necessary.

We will also be putting in a Butterfly/Hummingbird Garden in the front flower bed (where our garden was in 2014) and herbs and plants in another bed. I’ll do a post on those as soon as I get them cleaned out and planted.

Sweet Ricotta Pie

This is my first go at baking with everyone over at Tuesdays With Dorie. If you like to bake or just to look at food others make go check out the blog. It is pretty cool!

So this time we’re making Sweet Ricotta Pie from the book Baking With Julia by Dorie Greenspan. You can pick up a copy on Amazon or wherever you go to buy books. Since this is not my own creation I will not be posting the recipe. But I encourage you to go buy the book. It has a ton of great baking recipes.

As usual I had my little chefs helping out. They love to cook, which makes me smile. It’s a great learning activity plus it gets them to try foods they might not normally want to try. I firmly believe if a child grows and/or cooks it they will try and love all different kinds of food.

We started by making the crust or Pasta Frolla. Dough is always a fun process.

The crust recipe was very simple and turned out great.

Next we mixed the filling, added it to the crust and created a quick lattice top.

The pie turned out great! We all loved the mildly sweet flavor and creamy ricotta texture. We will definitely make this again.
